The Impersonation of Mr. Peacock
(The Liar) was conceived by choreographer Nancy McCaleb and video
artist Eloisa Haudenschild. Francis Al˙s’s proposal that McCaleb
continue the aborted movements of his anonymous heroes and his
suggestion of the title of the dance provided the conceptual basis of
the work. Al˙s is well-known for his paseos (strolls) through cities
that chart the terrain of urban life. He says that the paseo is a
“journey without the illusion of a final destination.” Al˙s was invited
to participate in the Venice Biennale. He sent a peacock in his stead
to stroll the city. The Impersonation of Mr. Peacock explores chance
meetings and unexpected turns of events, creating a riveting yet
poignant look at human interaction within a transient landscape.
